The Garden of Ninfa, built on the ruins of the medieval town of Ninfa in the Pontine Marshes (Agro Pontino), has been classified by the New York Times as one of the most beautiful and romantic gardens in the world. The name Ninfa (Nymph) derives from a temple of the Roman era, dedicated to the Naiad Nymphs goddesses of spring water, which is still located in the garden.
Situated less than 80 km south-east of Rome at the foot of the Lepini mountains, the town of Ninfa spells out the history of a community that lost and regained her identity several times during the centuries. Belonging to the Caetani family since the 14th century, the site was abandoned in 1382 but in 1922 Lelia Caetani, the last descendant of the Caetani family, and her husband Hubert Howard, began to create the garden as it is today, with more than 1300 botanical species over the eight acres of landscape.
Here is where many writers, such as Virginia Wolf, Truman Capote, Ungaretti and Moravia found inspiration for their creations.
After the visit to the gardens, we will head to the walled hill town of Sermoneta to visit Castello Caetani, one of the best-preserved castle in Italy. Originally called Sulmo, this medieval town is even cited by Virgil in his tale of The Aeneid. It rises up on a hill at 843 feet above sea level, dominating over the Pontine Plain. This will be the perfect place for our eyes to start to glaze over, aiming for the horizon and enjoying the moment.
