Here was Rome indeed at last; and such a Rome as no one can image in its full and awful grandeur! We wandered out upon the Appian Way, and then went on, through miles of ruined tombs and broken walls, with here and there a desolate uninhabited house: past the Circus of Romulus, where the course of the chariots, the stations of the judges, competitors, and spectators, are yet as plainly to be seen as in old time: past the tomb of Cecilia Metella: past all in-closure, hedge, or stake, wall or fence: away upon the open Campagna, where on that side of Rome, nothing is to be beheld but Ruin. A desert of decay, somber and desolate beyond all expression; but with a history in every stone that strews the ground.
(C. Dickens)

With its stunning ruins and temples surrounded by nature, the Appian Way represents the eternal side of Rome in the best way, a place where to lay your armor down and jump into the past. It is the oldest and most famous of the network of paved highways built and maintained by consuls and other Roman magistrates. It extends from Rome to Brindisi (the main seaport from which the Romans sailed to Greece) to the south, and was commissioned by Appius Claudius Caecus, then censor, in 312 B.C. The extended highway, more than 350 miles long, became a lifeline of the empire. We will explore the Appian Way and the sights of the monuments before our eyes will recall ancient glories that will never fade.
