The Orvieto Hiking Day Trip follows a key portion of Via Francigena around the historical town of Orvieto.  Along the way and within the town, we will experience stunning sites and learn about the history that formed this key town in central Italy.  Some of the stops will include the fortress walls, Saint Patrick’s Well, Orvieto’s underground, and the city’s Duomo Basilica.  In the Middle Ages, the Via Francigena was the major pilgrimage route running from France to Rome and Apulia. The Via Francigena was not a single main road like a classical stone block Roman road but comprised several routes that developed over the centuries as trade and pilgrimage changed.   Today some pilgrims travel on foot, on horseback, or by bicycle on Via Francigena.
